Reflecting on 2023.

As 2023 comes to a close, we want to thank our clients and reflect on an incredible year of growth.

We founded Elaborate with a vision of solving the burnout crisis for healthcare staff.

Addressing the quality of life crisis among healthcare workers is not just a matter of their well-being; it profoundly impacts the entire healthcare system and, ultimately, the care that we receive as patients.

Here are a few points that speak to the significance of solving this crisis:

  • Staffing availability: Burnout contributes to a shortage of healthcare workers, increasing workload for remaining staff and making it more challenging for patients to access care. Recent Medscape surveys of thousands of physicians have found 26% of physicians are actively considering leaving clinical to escape burnout and 29% have already reduced clinical availability to combat feelings of burnout.
  • Medical errors: Studies published in JAMA and the Annals of Internal Medicine have shown that burnout among healthcare professionals is associated with higher rates of medical errors. In a cross-sectional study of 11,395 physicians, burnout showed to be an independent risk factor for clinically significant error.
  • Rising medical costs: 15% of annual $1T healthcare administrative spending is attributed to clinical admin work. Doctor burnout specifically costs the health system $4.6B annually. This has an impact on patients' wallets: roughly 50% of U.S. adults say it is difficult to afford health care costs, and one in four say they or a family member in their household had problems paying for health care in the past 12 months.

Our starting point was to eliminate the pain associated with managing the overwhelming increase in patient messaging, which clinicians consistently cited as the top contributing factor to burnout. To put it simply, we were on a mission to cure the inbasket for clinicians.

"Simply put, we are on a mission to cure the inbasket."

In record time, the impact of our inbasket solution has surpassed our greatest expectations. In 2023, we showed:

  • Clinicians and patients love Elaborate. We achieved an 89% clinician auto-acceptance rate. 92% of patients say that we helped them better understand and engage with their health data.
  • Clinicians are spending less time doing tasks that drive burnout. After just a few weeks, new clinician users saw a 13% average reduction in daily pajama time and 28% reduction in high risk burnout time, directly driving a more balanced workload.
  • True automation is powering enterprise. Partnering with health systems and large provider groups, we've delivered fully automated end-to-end experiences to hundreds of thousands of patients nationwide. Recognition from prominent outlets like Business Insider, Fast Company, and Bessemer solidified our presence in the expanding set of innovation solutions embraced by industry leaders.
  • AI can respect the practice of medicine. Implementing our embedded, deterministic clinical algorithm didn’t require any extra daily time or clicks from clinical users. Equally importantly, our flexible architecture allowing both group and individual customizations, enabled us to be the default delivery mechanism for 100% of new health data flowing through our clients EMRs (yes, including Epic).

To all of our partners and clinical users: Thank you for trusting us to power such an important part of your patient experience. We can’t wait to show you what’s coming in 2024.

Happy New Years to all our clients: present and future! We are grateful to have you on this journey to eliminate clinical burnout with us.
